Finishing Plywood Flooring

How to Finish Plywood Flooring

When it comes to finishing  plywood board, the best option is usually a dark stain and several coats of polyurethane clear finish will bring the plywood to a high luster. The best way to apply the stain is to have it brushed in or alternatively you can roll it in and then allow for the finish to dry and then  use a polyurethane coating.

Attaching  Plywood to the subfloor as with other underlayments use fasteners, which should each penetrate the underfloor (subfloor) by about 3/4's of an inch. This should not protrude into the subfloor if possible by more than 1/8 inches. If the underlayment is being installed through older floors, or floor coverings that have been there previously, then the depth of the floor covering should be considered before choosing the nail type to adfix the plywood to the subfloor.

Removing Vinyl Flooring from Plywood

Attaching Luan To Subfloor

Plywood  can be removed fairly easily. Just cut it into strips as long as there is no vinyl backing left. Getting all the staples removed or beat down is by far the hardest part.
If it's ran underneath the cabinets use a sharp razor knife and score it several times and it should break off pretty clean.
A lot of staples will have slivers of luan caught underneath you should either pull out or use needle nose pliers to remove the sliver then hammer then down flush. When you remove the luan don't want anything sticking up.
It's a good idea to refasten the subfloor onto the joist with screws or screw shank underlayment nails. You should see how flat it is too... may have to belt sand some seams.

How To Install Plywood and Tools Required

  • Make sure the subfloor is dry and structuraly sound

Tools Required for Plywood Installation

Drill Kit, Circular Saw, Wallboard Knife, Floor Patching Compound, Floor Roller, 1 inch Wood Screws, 1/8 inch notched trowel, Jig Saw, Power Sander, 1/4 inch notched trowel,  Fiberglass Mesh Tape, Thin-set Motar, and Deck Screws.

Using Staples to Install Plywood Flooring

Using Staples to Install  Plywood (Stapling Plywood)

Install plywood with staples to the subfloor plywood using 1/2" staples. You should staple every 6 inches around the edges and every 8 inches at the centre of the plywood boarding. At this point you have the choice to make as to whether you wish to use glue to adfix the luan to the plywood subflooring.

Once this has been completed, you can sand all the seams so that they become level, and then any gaps or spaces, you can use high grade filler (wood) or otherwise, as recommended by the maker to finish the surface before installing top floor.

Make one more visiual scan to ensure that there are no staples sticking above the seams of the luan underlayment, as this will disrupt the surface of vinyl or laminate top flooring when it is installed or during use. Any staples, rising above this level, should be tapped on with a hammer until flush.

Applications for Thin Plywoods

 Indoor Use and Outdoor Use

Using plywood for building indoor projects a good choice is pine veneers. Pine Veneer is labelled sandypine, or BC. They not to expensive and are good for all your little household projects. You can even sand, smooth and finish this plywood to get that professional look.

Plywood for Marine Use

Marine ply is also going to have more plies than typical construction ply, you want to be on the look out for higher numbers, greater than 7 in my opinion. Marine ply is going to be lighter than ext ply and especially pressure treated ply. For your boat I would go with the Home Depot pressure treated varieties. Your best bet is to get 2 sheets of 3/4 pt ply, let them dry for a week, then glue them together.

Lightweight Plywood Types

lightweight plywood

Marine Grade plywood is usually considered good for uses that will involve a project getting wet, such as Marine Applications and Boat Building. Marine plywood is a specially treated plywood that is designed to resist rotting in a high-moisture environment. Marine plywood is frequently used in the construction of docks and boats. Luan Plywood, is not shown to react well to moisture exposure.

WBP plywood is so called because it is Weather and Boil Proof. During manufacture this product plywood is constructed with weather resistant adhesives which allow it to endure maximum humidity levels. It is often used for outside construction projects by do-it-yourselfers for decking furniture and landscaping. It is also useful for exterior protection on small frame structures such as sheds, and garages. It will require a coat of paint or a varnishing to bring it to full protective values and strength. -----------------

MDF Plywood : Description

What is MDF Plywood? Well I'll give you a brief description of it's background here. MDF Plywood is actually an acronym for Medium Density Fibreboard. It is a specially engineered product which is created when hardwood or softwood is broken down into fibers and then combined with wax in a resin. This then forms panels (plywood) by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF Plywood is actually denser than regular plywood, but can be used in the same applications or those that might call for greater strength than run of the mill plywood

Plywood Underlayment For Vinyl

Plywood Underlayment For Vinyl

CDX Plywood

Because Vinyl, forms very tightly to the surface floor when installed it tends to show all uneven patches, and groves. To reduce the appearance of surface floor when you install Vinyl, or any other flooring material a good choice to use is plywood. Plywood, is a thin underlayment that is light, and very simple to install. While plywood does help in smoothing out surface floor irregularities, it is not always the best solution for all flooring types.

Description of Luan

Plywood is a quarter inch thick, and usually is delivered in 4 x 8 sheets. It is manfactured by stacking thin strips of mahogany at right angles then bonding them to form large panels. The panels have an abrasive side and a smooth side. The smooth side should be placed facing up, when using the material as an underlayment.

Installing Plywood Subflooring for Laminate

1. Use as thick a subflooring material as you can, or you can find. This will be important when moving on to the grout and tile work.

2. Stiffen the floor to ensure that the new subfloor will be strong than the previous flooring.

3. Nails may not be strong enough for installation and may pop out. Use a ring shank nail, and it is basically a screw.

4. Put down a layer of  plywood, as an isolation membrane and to protect the tile from cracking. If necessary, plywood is a bit expensive but worth it if you are looking for a quality job. You can staple or nail for installation.

Plywood Subfloor Installation

Plywood Subfloor Installation

When installing plywood subfloor, you can place the laminate directly over the  plywood. This will work regardless of room temperture, and will lock out moisture if that is a concern of yours as well. When you attach the flooring, use staples with a quarter crown. They are small and fast, and they won't leave holes if you decide down the line to refinish the flooring. Also leave quarter inch expansion at all vertical walls. This is important to allow for strinkage and expansion during different climate conditions which you may experience throughout the year.
